6/20/2023 0 Comments The Community by Ben Leech![]() ![]() ![]() We knew the wake would have to be at the Pirelli Stadium and we sat down with Murray’s and settled on Stapenhill Cemetery for the burial, and we knew the service would be about his life, some stories and a bit of music. “We knew when he passed away that he wanted a non-religious funeral and that he wanted to be buried. But the landlord in the first pub offered them a drink, and it happened in the second pub and they got absolutely battered and my dad can’t remember the game or if he even got there! In those days there was no social media or Radio Derby so my dad and my uncle volunteered to go round the pubs and tell all the landlords the game was on. is when it was snowing in the 1950s and nobody thought the game would be on but a local ref said it was playable. ![]() “He got me into Burton Albion, and we went to a lot of away games together and as I said in the eulogy, we got lost going to Moor Green like all other Brewers fans and we had some great memories. “Mum and dad were married for 60 years and dad still had the ability to scare her half to death shouting at the top of his voice, ‘goal’ and ‘up the Brewers’ when listening to Radio Derby on his headphones. When he couldn’t be there any longer, he listened to Radio Derby and the back page of the Burton Mail was what he always read first. He was a season ticket holder right up to 2019 when his dementia started. Ian said: “Dad was at the very first game against Gloucester in 1950 and Burton Albion carried on being a massive part of his life. ![]()
