I found myself laughing at a few of her comments because, as a parent, I could totally relate. I listened to the audiobook, and there were roughly 10 minutes of the author discussing her love of books and where she enjoys reading. “Two hundred years ago, there was a storm.” Just throw my 2017 anticipation list away, because Strange the Dreamer was all I needed this year. Not A Court of Wings and Ruin, not Tyrant's Throne, not Skullsworn, not All the Crooked Saints, not The Chosen, not anything. I don't see how anything I'll read in 2017 can beat this. Yet, this book feels unratable, because how do you rate perfection instead of just feeling at a loss of words because of its awe? This book is so much greater than five stars. In fact, the last time I felt this was back in 2015 with The Name of the Wind, and the same feeling of guilt from giving other books five star ratings is here again. This isn't the type of book to come around often. The feeling while reading this is indescribable, but the closest word choice would have to be pure bliss. This is that rare type of book that, while reading, is a constant reminder of why you fell in love with reading in the first place. “On the second Sabbat of Twelfthmoon, in the city of Weep, a girl fell from the sky. Have you ever loved a book so much that it completely fills your soul, warms your heart, and heals your broken pieces? 6/29/2023 0 Comments Mirror mirror by gregory maguireThe year is 1502, and seven-year-old Bianca de Nevada lives perched high above the rolling hills and valleys of Tuscany and Umbria at Montefiore, the farm of her beloved father, Don Vicente. Setting the story amid the cultural, political and artistic whirlwind of Renaissance Italy-and casting the notorious Lucrezia Borgia as the Evil Queen- Mirror Mirror will enthrall a wide array of book lovers ranging from adult fans of Harry Potter to readers of the sophisticated stories of Angela Carter. The acclaimed author who re-imagined a darker, more dangerous Land of Oz in his New York Times bestselling series The Wicked Years, offers a brilliant reinvention of the timeless Snow White fairy tale. “Entertaining…profound….A novel for adults that unearths our buried fascination with the primal fears and truths fairy tales contain.” - Christian Science Monitor After several meetings, this committee submitted its report to the McGrawHill Book Company in September 1925. Zeman could have chosen a multitude of styles for her artwork for this book, but it works so well to utilize the stylistic motifs from ancient Assyrian sculptures and friezes in this instance. I may have forgotten about much of the plot until this re-read, but the artwork was instantly recognizable and enigmatic. We got this story (and still have it) because we read anything and everything available in the myths and legends section, and its one that has struck strongly in my memories. Maybe these stories are more difficult to romanticize or the plots are just a bit too unfamiliar for most people to delve into. Myths and legends from cultures around the world are always a popular topic, but the focus still tends to be on the Greco-Roman traditions, with dashs of Egyptian, Chinese, and Eastern-European thrown in, and few go back far enough to touch on the stories of Gilgamesh. For all its critical aclaim, this book seems to have been one which slipped through the cracks with the general population, since very few people I know ran into it as a kid and I don't see it often in book stores or libraries. "synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title. Of course, neither Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Will Navidson nor his companion Karen Green was prepared to face the consequences of that impossibility, until the day their two little children wandered off and their voices eerily began to return another story - of creature darkness, of an ever-growing abyss behind a closet door, and of that unholy growl which soon enough would tear through their walls and consume all their dreams. The story remains unchanged, focusing on a young family that moves into a small home on Ash Tree Lane where they discover something is terribly wrong: their house is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Now, for the first time, this astonishing novel is made available in book form, complete with the original colored words, vertical footnotes, and newly added second and third appendices. Starting with an odd assortment of marginalized youth - musicians, tattoo artists, programmers, strippers, environmentalists, and adrenaline junkies - the book eventually made its way into the hands of older generations, who not only found themselves in those strangely arranged pages but also discovered a way back into the lives of their estranged children. No one could have anticipated the small but devoted following this terrifying story would soon command. Years ago, when House of Leaves was first being passed around, it was nothing more than a badly bundled heap of paper, parts of which would occasionally surface on the Internet. 6/28/2023 0 Comments Big machine lavalleUntil one day a letter appears, summoning him to the frozen woods of Vermont.
